An African safari is not finished without taking a flight on a hot air balloon.

In 1976, Alan Root and his wife Joan- wildlife movie producers, used a hot air balloon to take film clips of wildlife. It was trouble-free, to use the balloon to access spots where an automobile was unable to reach, to film panoramic aerials of wild animals.

Thereafter, the approach attracted the interest of clients who were prepared to pay top-dollar for this once a lifetime sensation. This gave rise to balloon safaris in Kenya Tanzania safaris.

Its early morning in the Masai Mara. The cover of darkness is still intense on the dawn and causes the reddish orange flame from the burner of the hot-air balloon illuminate vividly bright.

As the sun comes out from behind the hills, the 100-foot high balloon is adrift above the Masai Mara savanah with each one of us lodged in a woven basket mounted on the mammoth balloon.

Simply put, it's magical! The air currents elevate us off trail, beyond the rim of the Ngama hills and across in the direction of the Talek River. Below, a set of gray-back Jackals run haphazardly amongst the thickets and a hare darts to its underground retreat.

Afloat, we have a vantage eagle's eye sight of the vastness of the Masai Mara and the Serengeti reserves stretching to the extent where the eye can see. It appears boundless.

We take 90 degrees angle and below we notice the heads of giraffes over the canopy of acacia bushes as they browse the foliage, hardly acknowledging us drifting in the air above.

After 1 hr afloat, the flight comes to an end and a bouncy landing brings us back to the ground. Here we inch out of the carrier to a champagne breakfast. The beauty is that this breakfast takes place in the wild, no matter where you land, and it's cooked as you watch with the burners that minutes before kept you floating in the air. What a way to commence our day!

"One of the things that amazes lots of first-time balloonists is the absolute tranquility, the silence as you float about the plains, the forest and the streams of the Masai Mara. The noises below drift clearly upwards: a lion's bellow, elephants crashing through the shrubs, baboons perched on the tips of the trees and shrubs. If you're lucky you will soar high overhead for the scene of a lifetime. " the captain offers.

After the end year rains, the vegetation is flourishing green as we drive back to our lodge observing game en-route. It is such a contrast as these are the similar grasslands which, in November, were golden, dried out and hash.

All of a sudden we come across a mother cheetah marking her territory, spraying it with urine. Once executed, she scans our company and then releases a soft chirping sound as she makes her way through the grass. Most likely she is searching for her cubs.

The grasslands are teeming with elephants, buffaloes, topi, wildebeests and other antelopes and the sight is just striking.
