How You Can Stop Puppy Chewing
Chewing is a very natural and anticipated behavior in any puppy and if you're trying to end that behavior, you should first understand that it is a part of them.
Pups are going to chew on objects, either because they are bored to death or simply because they are teething. So instead of trying to stop your puppy from doing so, you should redirect their focus and keep them busy. You can do this by making your dog do lots of things to do that they wouldn't wish to chew up your rug, sandals, or couch cushions.
Why You Have to Stop Puppy Chewing
Several people might think that chewing is a natural behavior when a puppy is still young and just let them go on. And some do the exact opposite and punish their pup and this is wrong because it will confuse the pup and this will result in other behavior issues.
The fact is that you have to balance both of these reactions. You should show your dog that chewing on your stuff is not a good thing, but never use negative reinforcements simply because there are lots of alternatives.
How you can Stop Puppy Chewing
Here are a couple of things you can do when your puppy's chewing at something:
Behavior Adjustment - instead of stopping your pup from chewing on your stuff, you can train it to chew on the proper things, like a plaything and you can praise the pup when it starts to chew on it. This will help show your pup that chewing the plaything is good and the other thing is not.
Keep Your Pup Active - besides redirecting your puppy from the items that you don't want them to chew, you also have to keep them from being too bored. Puppies will chew anything just to make themselves active, even if they're not teething. You can prevent this by getting them plenty of exercise and playing when you're at home. You can also leave them chew toys when you're not home.
Crate Training - if leaving them a toy to play with when you're not home isn't enough, you can try crate training them. This will restrict their access to the home.
Aversion Sprays - you can make use of a spray such as Bitter Apple or Cayenne which is harmless and humane. This will help them easily associate the spray with the items that they're chewing on and stop them from doing it.
Aside from using these strategies to stop your pup from chewing stuff, you should always keep in mind not to punish your pup or hit them for any reason. This is will only mislead them and they will likely never find out what they did bad.
Be Consistent
You also have to be consistent if you like to stop puppy chewing. When you leave the house, be sure that you don't leave clothing or stuff toys out there for them to chew on. Keep in mind, you have to stipulate the rules and make sure that your pup follows them.
